Having Dr . Jordan Peterson at this year ’ s Annual IT Sales and Marketing Boot Camp was deeply personal for me , so this opening letter to you will be a shift from my usual business ramblings to talk about my faith and a few very personal stories . I don ’ t expect everyone to agree that this was a good choice of topic or even to like it , but I felt the need to share it , given the connection I have with so many of you . If you are not one of those people and simply want business content , you might want to skip this one . I understand , and I love and respect you all the same .
Thanks to the YouTube algorithms and my voracious appetite for all things personal development , business , and podcasts , I first learned of Dr . Peterson via one of his YouTube videos , where he was lecturing students at either the University of Toronto or Harvard . I don ’ t recall the title of the video or the specific topic , but I distinctly remember him saying something that changed me in a profound way :
“ Life is difficult . It ’ s tainted by malevolence , it ’ s cast in tragedy , and you need something to offset that because otherwise it embitters you , and if you ’ re embittered , you become vengeful and cruel . . . and that puts you on a path to hell .”
Oddly , I found what could easily be interpreted as a very negative admission about life to be uplifting and freeing . It was as if someone finally said what everyone already knew — the unspoken truth that needs to be said but nobody wants to admit . Although I am very successful and very blessed , I did at the time feel the heat of hell on my back .
