And they did . Small and medium businesses ( SMBs ) have increasingly turned to managed service providers for critical aspects of their operations , helping to fuel the MSP industry to $ 500 billion globally in roughly 20 years .
Two key trends are driving growth , says Gary Pica , an “ OG ” of the industry and founder of TruMethods , now part of Kaseya . One , SMBs make up an increasingly larger percentage of the overall US GDP ; and two , SMBs are spending more money on tech as a percentage of revenue .
“ MSPs are the beneficiary of both of those vectors ,” he says . “ When you combine them together , you get a market for MSP services that ’ s growing at an unprecedented rate .”
The threat of cyberattacks — something that SMB owners started seeing on the nightly news — threw gasoline on that growth , Pica says .
