Economic Liaisons have already had a big impact: Since launch, over 50,000 Veterans, family members, employers and local service organizations have connected with our liaisons.
They have engaged major employers to see the value that Veterans bring to high-demand industries and are helping them hire and retain qualified Veterans through the Veterans Employment Center™ (VEC).
Can you tell us more about how the VEC™ came to be?
The VEC™ was an idea that began as early as 2009 with the Department of Labor. Those conversations matured into what the VEC™ is today – an interagency tool. For years, the federal government was saturated with various Veterans employment job boards and search engines. The government took on a difficult task: unify around one tool and cancel duplicative contracts. This is not something the government is known to do. Most vendors believed themselves to be best-in-class. Everyone recognized that the private sector and philanthropy also had similar tools and that we could partner with these organizations at no cost to the government. Veterans and employers had repeatedly asked for the “Easter egg hunt” to end. At one point there was a count of upwards of 16 or so federal tools that were similar. Very confusing for all involved.
So what is the VEC™ and what does it do?
The VEC™ is an online resource that offers tools to assist Veterans and employers with their job search.
It allows employers to find highly qualified candidates and Veterans to discover meaningful jobs. It is the federal government’s single online source for connecting transitioning Servicemembers, Veterans, and their family members with employers committed to hiring them. (cont. on next page)
..If history has shown us anything, it’s that all you have to do is give Veterans an opportunity and they will go beyond anything you could ever envision.”
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Bob McDonald at the launch of VECI
