1. What is VCTP and who is it for?
The Veterans Career Transition Program (VCTP) is a no-cost, online training program delivered by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University designed to address the main issues related to the transition from service to the post-military career in the corporate workforce: career readiness, training, and industry-level certification in IT, HR, or operations fields. The VCTP is for active duty service members who are within 6 months of separation from the military, members of the Selected Reserve, post-9/11 veterans and the spouses of eligible participants (regardless of future separation date).
2. How can VCTP help transitioning service members and spouses?
Training is offered at no-cost to eligible participants and does not utilize military education benefits. Costs are currently underwritten by JPMorgan Chase & Co as part of their extensive collaboration with Syracuse University and as founding partner of the IVMF. Once accepted, participants are enrolled into one of three different training pathways: Information Technology, Business, or Customer Service Excellence. Students located near one of our 9 installations are enrolled in the four day Onward to Your Career in person class, providing understanding and insight into the corporate culture of civilian business/industry, government, and other civilian sector employment opportunities. Upon completion of in person training, students are allotted up to 10 weeks to complete online pathway specific curriculum.
Students who are not located near an installation are enrolled in online courses—accessible at any time - from any location and have up to 13 weeks to complete the coursework VCTP is offered through an advisor-led cohort admitted quarterly and offers a level of professional support to participants to include career preparation services and job matching assistance upon successful completion of the program.
3. What makes a good VCTP candidate?
One of the biggest barriers transitioning military and spouses face during their participation in the VCTP is time. Transitioning service members and their families are facing many competing priorities during their transition: job search, visiting college campuses, moving, visits with the transition assistance office, etc… The content of the coursework with the VCTP, although very flexible and easy to navigate, is challenging and absolutely requires time and focus. Those participants who have already separated from the military, some for years already, still face competing priorities between work, family, and school commitments.
