The Yellow Ribbon program is school and program specific, meaning that an institution enters into an agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide a school contribution amount to a specific number of students for specific degrees or programs. Sometimes, a school will offer the program to all undergraduates who are accepted to any program or to a particular number of graduate students in a specific program or school within the university.

For instance, Washington University’s Olin Business School participates in the Yellow Ribbon program. The school offers unlimited funds to up to 150 students accepted into any of their graduate programs, such as their MBA program or master’s degrees in finance, accounting, supply chain, or customer analytics. The University of Missouri – St. Louis provides all undergraduate students who qualify and are accepted into an undergraduate program up to $10,000 towards tuition. Between the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon program, students pay no tuition costs out of pocket.

Getting a great education helps one reach their career goals, but being saddled with student loan debt from that education can negatively impact a career since it requires that one be able to start paying that debt back six months after graduation.

Limiting incurred debt or eliminating it can open up opportunities for the new graduate who can look for the job they want, not necessarily the one they need.

If you or a loved one are looking into college, add the Yellow Ribbon program to your search. It may just help you achieve a debt-free education.
