Question: I've heard acquaintances talk about their CV. What is it? Do I need one?
What is a CV?
A Latin phrase, curriculum vitae, translates loosely to “course of my life” in English. If you’ve ever reviewed this lengthy document (in American anyway…in Europe, a CV is a bit more like a résumé ), you probably do realize that the CV reflects what looks like a life’s work.
The CV gives a complete picture of one’s academic and professional life and achievements. Academics and scientists are often required to submit a CV in order to apply for various positions, grants, and awards.
How does a CV compare to a résumé?
A CV is typically much longer than a résumé. Whereas you may tailor a résumé every time you apply for a job, you will most likely have one, up-to-date master version of your CV. You still target the CV to specific positions, but you are less likely to omit whole parts of your career.
A résumé gives a snapshot or glance of the most pertinent experiences you’ve had, but a CV gives an entire picture of your complete professional life.
