Networking is absolutely key for veterans and military spouses when searching for a job. It is the most effective method for finding employment, especially those positions in the hidden job market that aren’t advertised to the general public.
While there are several avenues for networking, such as connecting with colleagues and friends and also volunteering — consider joining a professional organization to expand your network.
There are organizations specific to veterans and military spouses, yet joining a professional one associated with an individual’s career field can provide valuable opportunities.

Join a Professional Organization
Research and identify local chapters of a national association in your area and the benefits of a membership.
Often, membership includes invitations to networking events where you can meet other professionals in your industry and develop meaningful relationships with them.
Keep in mind who other members might be: directors, project managers, or hiring managers for companies in your area where connections with them could potentially develop into a referral or a job lead! Additional membership privileges may consist of access to electronic newsletters, webcasts, online communities, job fairs, and job postings.
Although some organizations require a membership fee, consider this fee an investment in your job search and career development.
