What are you most proud of when it comes to your work with Veterans? While we helped 73 female Veterans last year, we’re proud to say that we’ve helped 206 female Veterans in 2014. We had one woman come through all of our pre-employment training and learn to write her first resume ever. She was hired as a sheriff’s deputy. We are proud to provide Veterans with this service.
How can individuals provide support to Dress for Success Houston? Individuals can donate clothing Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each March, we also host a suit drive called Send One Suit. What advice do you have for other organizations that want to help the military community? They should work on bridging the gap, not only between themselves and Veterans, but also themselves and other service organizations. They can network with other organizations to better provide services to Veterans. While no one
organization can do everything the Veteran needs, an organization can point them in the right direction to get the assistance they need. A housing organization can help someone who is looking for housing by also pointing them to assistance where they can find clothing and assistance for finding a job to pay for housing.
Dress for Success Houston has achieved a lot for female vets. What do you hope to do next? We’ll continue to provide that ongoing and continued support through the suiting session, resume workshops that take their veteran resume and translate it into a civilian resume, and mock interview workshops. We’ve now seen that some vets are doing great with the resume, but aren’t landing the job after the interview. We’re going to help solve that problem. And then, we’re going to provide the network job search support group because they obviously face different issues in searching for work.
Post-911 Veterans can call Dress for Success Houston directly. Other Veterans will need to be referred through a referral agency.
