Q: In June, you recommended trying out Trailhead as a way to gain experience with Salesforce, but I’m still not sure if it’s the right fit. When does it make sense to get Salesforce certified?

Salesforce certification is a process that can only occur through Salesforce itself. To be certified as an Administrator or Developer, you must take exams designed by Salesforce that extend well beyond the realm of basic user knowledge. Your certification marks you as a Salesforce professional; as such, you

would look for jobs that target Salesforce administration or development so that you can see a return on your certification investment.

Whether you are looking to become a certified Administrator or Developer, this track entails engaging with the Salesforce website, taking advantage of its test preparation materials, and scheduling time to hone your skills.

It may take six months or more to prepare for the exam on your own, or you could take certification training classes offered by Salesforce. However, these classes may be prohibitive in terms of scheduling and cost.

Due to its exam requirements, cost, and job-specific profile, you should only pursue Salesforce certification if you actually want to work as a Salesforce Administrator or Developer. If that option doesn't suit your needs or your wallet, and you want to learn what you will need to use Salesforce in the workplace, a free option like Trailhead would be your best bet.

Q: If I’m looking at any training programs that I have to pay for, what questions should I ask to ensure they’re a good fit?

Your initial impulse is a good one—the decision to pay for training or a course should always come with research and careful deliberation. While some programs may legitimately want to help you succeed, all degrees and certifications come with a cost attached. You need to make sure that the cost will be worth it for your overall career goals and your financial stability in the meantime.

When you are answering these questions, write down your answers and take your time doing the research so that you feel good about your decision.
