An article in our February issue discussed the benefits of establishing a LinkedIn® profile to market yourself to recruiters and possibly find your next job. Marketing yourself does not stop there. Whereas you create and send out a traditional resume to be considered for an interview, successful networking on LinkedIn® requires a more proactive, engaged, and consistently active presence in order to network and hunt for new opportunities.

Strategic Self-Marketing on LinkedIn®:
Keywords to Increase Visibility
Keywords are an integral part of your LinkedIn® profile. With the correct use of keywords and buzzwords related to your experience, you make it easy to be found on LinkedIn®. The headline, summary, job titles, your work experience sections, skills, and any additional sections that you can add to your profile, like projects, should include top keywords.
Finding the right title or keywords can be difficult when starting out with your LinkedIn® profile. Take a look at profiles of people working in positions for which you’d like to be hired. What keywords and buzzwords are they using in their title, summary, experience listing and skills? Even if you do not have much experience, this exercise will help you gather what
you need to work on, either by finding
volunteer work or by putting a few more
hours in certain certifications or classes
online.
Settings to Expand your Network
What might sound like a minor detail, but can become very important is to look at your profile viewing settings. If they are set to ‘Anonymous’, you can cheat yourself out of valuable connection opportunities. By changing this setting to ‘Public’, you allow other members to see when you visited their profile, which might lead them to visit your profile or connect with you.
