 Things you need to know
 If the relocation expense has already been covered by your employer – either by
direct payment to the supplier or reimbursement of your costs – then you can’t
package this item. However if you have funded the expense yourself and are not
being reimbursed, or are receiving an allowance from your employer to cover
general relocation costs, then salary packaging will still be available.
 Like all salary packaged items, you can’t claim an income tax deduction on packaged
relocation expenses.
The expenses you can claim include:
 Temporary accommodation at your original location
 This expense can be claimed if your original home is unavailable or unsuitable as a
result of furniture removal or other factors relating to the relocation.
 You can’t claim this expense for any day after you start work at the new location.
 This expense can only be claimed for a maximum of 21 days.
 Temporary accommodation at your new location
 You can start claiming this expense a maximum of seven days before you start work
in the new location.
 This expense can be claimed for a maximum of four months – this can be extended
to six months if you provide a declaration that outlines your difficulty in finding
suitable long-term accommodation.
 The maximum claim period can be extended to 12 months if:
 you owned a home at your old location and sold it within six months of starting
work at the new location; and
 you provide a declaration outlining your difficulty in finding suitable long-term
accommodation.
 Necessary meals at your hotel
 The meals must be consumed while staying in a hotel, motel, hostel or guesthouse.
 The taxable value for each meal is $2 (or $1 if the family member is under 12). You
can only package the amount of the meal which exceeds the taxable value.
 Connection or reconnection of certain utilities
 If you had a telephone connection at your original residence you can only salary
package telephone connection in your new location.
