Your Training
Recruit training
Your career will start with a 10-week Basic Recruit Training Course at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire . The course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment . As well as fitness and military training , you will also learn about the RAF Lifestyle .
Specialist training
Your next step will be a specialist training course at the Defence Movements Training Squadron ( DMTS ), RAF Brize Norton , which lasts approximately 15 weeks . This course will give you a basic understanding of your role as a Logistics Mover , which includes transport procedures and regulations , aircraft loading and the handling of passengers and cargo . At the end of the course you will be on your way to gaining an Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Aviation Operations on the Ground .
My Role
I work on the traffic team on Air Movements Squadron ( AMS ), part of No 1 Air Mobility Wing ( 1AMW ) based at RAF Brize Norton . 1AMW are responsible for planning and executing the movement of defence personnel and cargo by air across the world . AMS are the permanent squadron of movers who are based at Brize . We comprise of the traffic , cargo , passenger and load control teams .
The traffic team works 24 / 7 to load and unload the aircraft , such as the C-17 , C130J Hercules and KC30 Voyager , that disembark and arrive at RAF Brize Norton . We use specific Aircraft Handling Equipment ( ACHE ) and vehicles that our personnel are trained to drive through RAF movements training courses .
Alongside some ACHE driving qualifications , including the small forklift and Atlas ( flatbed pallet loader ), I have been trained to operate the Voyager door and loading systems and hold a Civil Aviation Authority qualification to handle dangerous goods .
There are so many opportunities for training and development through the movements trade . I am hoping to be put forward for a Further Movements Training programme in the near future .
