Mysterious , breathtaking blue holes , the openings to underground caves , are scattered along the edges of the Wacissa River .
One of the most common and delightful sights along the Wakulla - a line of turtles basking together on a fallen log .
Returning to south Georgia from a visit to the Wakulla , one will pass through either Tallahassee or Monticello – I recommend the latter , if possible , for a longer but more scenic drive – and places to eat or to pause for an hour ’ s refreshment may be easily found , though I love best of all eating a picnic in sight of the river .
In wonder I have told you of the Wakulla . In wonder I will tell you of the Wacissa .
While the Wakulla ’ s source is protected by park and fence , one may start a paddling trip from the very beginning of the Wacissa , from the swamp that harbors springs pouring forth streams that broaden to a river of light-spangled water .
When I journey upon this river I use the services of Wacissa River Kayak and Canoe Rentals ( WRCR ). I have never tried another service , though I know others exist in the area , because I have never needed one – Corky ’ s prices are reasonable , his knowledge is extensive , and the service is excellent . I launch my rented kayak directly into the swamp behind his business , keeping a watchful eye out for snakes curled among the cypress knobs , and drift into the dark quiet of the forested river , passing a public boat ramp ( with swimming hole and rope swing ) only minutes later . From this point the Wacissa broadens rapidly and magnificently , and the sight of that wide water , teeming with life yet crowned by stillness , seems to recall some primeval memory of wilderness and awe .
