• Heat pump . This popular device is the champion of energy efficiency . It extracts and amplifies heat from the ambient air to warm your pool water . However , the nature of this system makes it less efficient in colder seasons . Consequently , if you want to swim in your pool in the fall , a heat pump may not live up to your expectations .

Your needs and budget The size and location of your pool , as well as the local weather conditions , will determine how much heat is required ( calculated in BTUs ) to bring the water to a comfortable temperature . Look for an AHRI-certified water heater to ensure the device delivers the necessary BTUs . If you ’ re watching your budget , make sure to consider both the purchase price and the unit ’ s energy consumption .
