The City of Moultrie , with the help of Lowe ’ s , upgraded the breezeway between First Avenue and the South Main Street parking lot . The area now houses tables where people can eat lunch downtown . you to everyone who supports our small businesses . It warms my heart to hear all the stories of locals supporting locals .
By the end of the year , the new camera system and the new wi-fi connection should be on-line . A new speaker system was installed in October just in time to have music for the holiday season and help Santa with the official Canopy of Lights countdown . The new Sportsman Breezeway and the Covered Breezeway improvements were completed along with the renovations of the South Main Parking lot . In March the doors to the new Downtown Welcome Center opened ; it ’ s home to downtown offices and meeting space .
Next year is expected to be another fantastic year for improvements for Moultrie . A new Georgia Pines mental health facility is expected to open in 2022 . This facility will be located across the street from the Moultrie Police Department and will handle a great need in the community . Other expected
A breezeway has taken the place of the former Sportsman Restaurant on First Street Southeast . The iconic local restaurant closed in December 2003 , and its building had deteriorated badly . It was torn down in 2021 as part of a long-term plan to revitalize downtown Moultrie .
improvements for 2022 include : Streetscape project around the former theater building , upgrades to the welcome center , possible park addition on First Street , and a possible second bike trail from First Avenue to hospital .
