Sid Collins , owner of the antique store , and Janet Carter , who has been one of the friendly faces you see helping customers for the past 38 years .
“ I wouldn ’ t sell my grandmother ’ s pieces but I bought a piece at the Olde Harmony Shop and I refinished it and put it in the store and sold it . Then , with that money , I bought two pieces and with that money , three pieces and it started like that ,” he said .
He said he started decorating with antiques and he ’ s always loved antiques and jewelry , so , it just evolved from that .
In 1996 , he closed the clothing store and moved everything down to where he ’ s now located at 112-114 First Street SE .
“ September 15 was our 45th anniversary ,” he said of how long he ’ s been in business between the clothing store and the antiques store .
In my personal opinion , Sid is one of the most knowledgeable people in Moultrie , when it comes to antiques , and I wanted to know how that came about .
“ On the job experience is probably 80 % of it ,” he said and added that , if he didn ’ t know , he had books to look things up it or on the internet .
“ But you live and learn a lot quickly with antiques , to tell the reproductions from the real thing ,” he said .
He said , however , that he has good pickers and two , who have been with him for 27 years , that will go out and find stuff for him . He said he can tell them what he needs and they ’ ll look for it while they ’ re out and about .
He said that he has a couple of rug guys who will do the same thing and look for specific colors . They send him photos of the rugs and then send the rugs to him so that customers can try them out at home .
“ I think that makes a lot of difference in why we ’ ve been as busy as we have because we do allow people to take things home and try them ,” he said .
