If your tax question involves the actual rate of taxation, contact your city councilman, county commissioner or school board member.
Tax Commissioner
The Office of Tax Commissioner applies the millage rates from each of the local governments to the values of each owner’ s property. An individual may owe tax to more than one government— a Moultrie homeowner, for instance, will owe taxes to the city, to the county, to the school board and to the state, according to Tax Commissioner Cindy Harvin.
The tax commissioner’ s office turns property values and millage rates into actual tax bills, mails them out and collects them. The Tax Commissioner’ s Office combines all taxes owed on a property into one bill, and when the property owner pays it, the office disburses the money appropriately.
The tax commissioner is elected by county voters to a four-year term.
The Tax Commissioner’ s Office also handles vehicle registration and mobile home taxes. Office hours are 8 a. m. to 4:30 p. m. Monday through Friday.
If your tax question involves the actual calculation of the bill, contact Harvin’ s office at 616-7410.
The Tax Commissioner has a web page where payments can be made or amounts can rechecked. Residents can print receipts for tax purposes there. The website is Colquittcountytax. com.
Appeals
You can appeal a property appraisal by the Board of Assessors. If the value is not changed, the appeal is sent to the Board of Equalization, which consists of three members and three alternate members who own property in Colquitt County. All members are appointed by the grand jury to fixed terms.
You may opt for arbitration instead of the Board of Equalization, but arbitration expenses must be paid equally by the property owner and the county. n
