THE GEAR

The industry has been changing in many ways with digital video coming out on many cameras but usually videographers use tape-based cameras (and sometimes digital) with fixed lenses that have a lower resolution and do not perform well in low light situations. Cinematographers use High Definition DSLR cameras (the same cameras that professional photographers use) with switchable lenses (the best in class) to give your wedding film that “movie look”. Camera movement is unbelievably important as well. It changes the mood and makes your wedding day seem even more grand.

Cinematographers use many different pieces of equipment to capture the in camera movement. A good cinematographer should have most or all of the following equipment: Sliders (for lateral movement), steadicam (for walking shots), cranes (vertical/arial shots) and professional audio recording devices on top of the standard tripod. These items are the same that is being currently used in movies & TV shows.

THE STORY

Most traditional wedding videographers show a complete event from start to finish. Cinematographers prefer to tell the story of who you are and how you became husband and wife. Think of it more like a home video vs. going to the movie theatre. When you tell a story in video format you will find that the end product is more interesting, holds peoples attention and will be much more dynamic. On top of that, while editing, we take all those moments and intertwine them with meaningful sound bites. These sound bites can be of the vows or an amazing speech… you never know! It may be something her father said to his daughter or the grooms reaction during a first look.

What does that mean for you? You will want to watch it from the beginning to the end and then you will want to watch it again!

THE MUSIC

Music is also incredibly important and can make or break a film . Cinematographers choose songs with lyrics that tell the story, Instrumental music that enhances the emotions, and songs with a beat that fits the event. Each client will have footage that contains approximately 4 to 7 songs which are handpicked Motivity Films. If possible we will also use songs from your event such as your first dance song.

With all wedding videos, we must comply with the copyright laws that are in place. Not every song is available for use which is another reason why we select the songs. Motivity Films will purchase the copyright usage for each and every video we produce allowing you (the client) to also share your highlight video with friends and family online!

THE LENGTH

A traditional videographer typically provides a 2+ hour video, most cinematographers give you a much shorter 25 minute(ish) film, but it is as simple as the old rule of quality over quantity. A wedding film will take you through a rollercoaster of emotions in 25 minutes but without boring anyone. Wedding films leave a stronger impact and will be watched hundreds of times. They help you remember and relive the happiest day of your life.

Here at Motivity Films we do our coverage a little different. Instead of receiving one long video, your DVD or Flash Dive will come with 3-4 separate films: The Highlight Video, The Wedding Ceremony, The Reception and The Speeches. If the speeches are short, they will be included in the reception video instead of on their own. All of these together usually work out to be around 25 minutes but the final length will depend on how long the ceremony lasts. If you have a 10 minute ceremony, the Ceremony Film will be no longer than 10 minutes. If you have an hour long ceremony, the video will be much longer.

RAW FOOTAGE

Motivity Films does not sell or release raw footage for any reason. The nature of cinema filming is much different than the traditional documentary style of videographers. We film in multiple small clips, not in long uncut takes like videographers. Also, All of our audio files are recorded as separate files from the video so, in short… you would end up with 100′s of audio-less video clips as well as random audio files making it hard (or near impossible) for our clients to actually use or edit.

We believe that just like a skilled craftsman builds a beautiful table from raw wood, we build beautiful videos from raw files. We cut, scrap and piece together an enduring and tangible product for you to enjoy. We are happy to offer you “Uncut Footage” as an addition – which is beginning to end footage from each event ( events include Ceremony, First Dance, Parent Dances, Cake Cutting, Garter and Bouquet Toss). If you would like to add Uncut footage, we must know before the wedding so we can add the additional camera needed.
