Upsala Heritage Day: Celebrating community
The folks in Upsala welcome all to join them in celebrating this year’ s Heritage Day, with the theme of“ Farms, Fields & Family.” The event is kicked off the Monday before, when the Medallion Hunt begins, Monday, Aug. 4. Clues will be posted on the Upsala City website at www. cityofupsala. com and at area businesses.
While all of the festivities are held Saturday, Aug. 9, The Upstage Junior Theater Camp will present“ Shrek the Musical” Friday, Aug. 8, at 7 p. m. at the Upsala Area Schools auditorium. Another performance is planned for Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a. m.
Saturday, Aug. 10, begins with registering at the Upsala High School at 8 a. m. to participate in the 5K run / walk.
Located on Main Street in Upsala, the Upsala Veterans Memorial Museum will be open all day.
The events for the afternoon are kicked off at 4 p. m. with the Upsala Heritage Day parade, which is historically one of the largest parades in the area.
After the parade, beginning at 5 p. m., fun for the whole family will continue in the city park. The park will be filled with activities for every age, such as children’ s train rides, a mechanical bull, face painting, kids’ games, kids’ inflatables, a petting zoo, Camp Ripley’ s climbing wall and a miniature golf course. The kids’ pedal pull will also be held at 6 p. m.
Several food vendors along with other vendors will be on-site selling jewelry, baked goods and more. One new food vendor this year is K & B Concessions of Little Falls, which sells gelato( frozen dairy dessert), root beer floats and more.
“ I had never heard of gelato before, so I had to look it up online, but it has more milk in it than traditional ice cream, which has more cream in it. It’ s supposed to be less calories too,” said Upsala Heritage Day Committee Member Rollie Johnson.
Music will be provided by a DJ starting at 8 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 9.
Upsala Ballpark Association( UBA) will hold its raffle drawing at 9 p. m., with fireworks at 9:30 p. m., which will be visible from the park.
Sunday morning, Aug. 11, Upsala Community Center will host a brunch from 9 a. m. – 1 p. m. The menu includes pancakes, sausage and bacon, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, caramel rolls, milk, juice and coffee. Proceeds will benefit the Upsala Community Center.
