Soo Line trail offers great view of Morrison County
The Soo Line trail offers ATV riders a unique view of the wilderness and wildlife of Morrison County.
Running 30 miles, the Soo Line now starts from the Great River Road, west of the Blanchard Dam, across Highway 10 between Little Falls and Royalton Northeast to the Morrison / Mille Lacs County Line. The new crossing over the Blanchard Dam, allows ATVers to cross the Mississippi. The trail provides a comfortable ride for those looking to spend a day in nature. It must be noted that newer portion of the trail near Blanchard Dam is a shared trail with walkers bicycles, so a speed limit of 10-15 miles per hour will be in place— please follow the signs.
Parking and trail access points are located at the trail head and in the communities of Genola and Hillman. Food and gas is also available in Pierz and Genola.
Perhaps the best stop along the trail is about eight miles east of Genola, which contains a park for recreational use. The park has a circle entry and exit and is located on the back side of a granite pile that was made during the early days of the railroad track development. The park has a 15-foot by 20-foot insulated shelter, picnic tables, an outdoor grill and a wonderful view of the Hillman Creek.
The trail is rated“ easy” by the Minnesota DNR, and is for ATVs considered as“ Class II.”
Riders can enjoy the trail year-round, with the exception of November, to accommodate deer hunters. The trail closes to ATVs when grooming starts for snowmobiles. Once grooming has been completed for the year in the spring, ATVs are once again allowed. The trail is provided by Morrison County and the Eastern Morrison County 4 Wheelers Club.
If a rider is not a resident of Minnesota, they must purchase a trail pass, and can find that information at www. dnr. state. mn. us / ohv / nonres _ pass. html.
