Pierz Oktoberfest, an end-of-summer tradition

For 42 years, the city of Pierz has welcomed people to its Oktoberfest celebration. This year, it will be held Aug. 30, where all the fun celebrates the city’ s German heritage.

Kicking off the annual festival is the excitement surrounding the annual medallion hunt, with clues starting Sunday, Aug. 23 and the hunt running throughout the week, or until the specially-marked medallion is found.

Daily clues can be found posted on the Pierz Oktoberfest’ s Facebook page. The lucky person who finds the medallion and who has purchased an official Oktoberfest button will win $ 500 in Pierz Bucks.

Oktoberfest begins in earnest at 11 a. m. Sunday, Aug. 30, with the parade sponsored by the Pierz Lions Club.

It typically features the Pierz Healy High School Band, as well as popular float entries, as it begins on First Avenue Southeast, goes along Edward Street, Third Avenue Northeast, Main Street and Park Avenue Southeast.

After the parade, the fun continues at Pierz Park, from 12:30 p. m. to 4:30 p. m. Available throughout the afternoon will be free inflatables for kids, kids’ pedal tractor pull, petting zoo, bingo, German food, homemade pie and ice cream, brats and kraut, Gemuse and Haluski and a beer garden.

Participants are encouraged to get involved in the festivities by wearing a German costume to all of Sunday’ s activities.
