DOORWAY -CHIPPENHAM
Doorway is a charity drop-in centre in Chippenham, Wiltshire. We provide a friendly, safe place for adults who are homeless or who have complex issues that might affect their ability to acquire and sustain a tenancy.
In 2010, Doorway was looking into a re-launch of drop-in football sessions, piloted in 2009. My explorations of the Twitter community, searching for people involved with homeless issues, led me to Jon Regler and the Streets Revolution project in Oxford. I visited their football drop-in, and drew great inspiration from what they were achieving from small beginnings.
We were aiming to provide supervised football activity for people aged 16+ who would not normally have access to sports opportunities , and offer a positive alternative to congregating on the streets outside normal drop-in hours. We hoped to encourage teamwork and social cohesion amongst guests. We sought to improve their general health and sense of wellbeing. We also hoped to develop relationships with other football projects with similar or related groups, and raise wider recognition locally of issues around homelessness.
