Nursing and Healthcare Exchange
Since 2006, Wehrwein’s leadership in the partnership has offered
students and faculty from both universities the opportunity to learn about
nursing and healthcare through exchanges. As part of this program,
students, faculty, and visiting scholars from Chongqing Medical University
have come to MSU. Wehrwein led the first Study Abroad program in China
for MSU nursing students in 2012.
Nursing for Life: RN Career Transition Program
To help address the nursing workforce shortage, Wehrwein
spearheaded this successful online program with a precepted clinical

practicum to prepare mid-to-late career RNs to transition safely and
confidently to clinical practice in new settings. The Blue Cross Blue Shield
of Michigan Foundation and the College of Nursing were among the
first recipients of a grant from Partners Investing in Nursing’s Future,
a joint venture of the Northwest Health Foundation and The Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation.
Michigan Healthcare Workforce
A champion of graduate level nursing education, Wehrwein serves as
an advocate to strengthen Michigan’s primary care infrastructure. For
more than 21 years she has worked to increase accessibility in underserved
communities, improve the delivery of effective and efficient care, modernize
nursing regulations and policies, and expand the APRN workforce.
• Member of the Michigan Department of Community Health Taskforce
on Nursing Practice, which published their final report, Nursing
Practice and the Health and Safety of Michigan’s People, in 2012
• Principal Investigator for a $1.42 million five year grant, Advanced
Nursing Education Expansion, supported by HRSA. Award dates:
