Walking Tour, designed to acquaint you
with the Montpelier property and the
archaeology we have done here over the
last 20 years.
After lunch,
you will join
our
archaeology
staff in our
current
survey area to begin metal detecting.
On Tuesday, you will spend the
morning metal detecting in the survey
area. In the afternoon, you learn about the
power of place on
guided tours of James
Madison’s House and
The Mere Distinction of
Color Exhibition .
During your tour of the
exhibition, you will have
the opportunity to talk
to Curator of
Archaeological
Collections, Dr. Mary
Furlong Minkoff, about
the its creation.
On Wednesday
morning you will join archaeology Crew
Chief, Christopher Pasch, on a walking
tour of our Civil War Encampment area,
where you will learn how gridded metal
detecting survey helped us discover the
areas occupied by South Carolinian troops
during the winter of 1863. You will spend
the remainder of the day metal detecting
in the survey area.
Thursday will be a departure from
metal detecting. In the morning, you will
receive hands-on
instruction in
archaeological
excavation on our
active archaeology
site. In the
afternoon, you
will join our
Archaeology Laboratory staff to discover
what happens to artifacts after survey and
excavation.
Friday will be a day full of metal
detecting, as you complete the survey of
your assigned area. We invite you to join
us for a happy hour discussion in the
afternoon to recount your experience on
the program. We will also host a
celebratory farewell diner, where will hold
a graduation ceremony to commemorate
your week with us.
No prior experience is necessary to
participate in this program. As long as you
are excited to
learn we want you
to join us! This
experience is also
family friendly,
and we welcome
participants ages
12 to 90. Since
this is a multiday
program, you will also have the option to
live on the historic Montpelier property
for the duration of your time with us.
