JANUARY 2014
Parish Nurse Message
of our lives that is getting too much (or
too little) time and attention from us.
And to figure out what we can do to create more balance in our lives. Making the
necessary changes will likely require
some planning, some trial and error, and
some persistence. But the results will be
worth it! For many of us, spending intentional time
each day/each week/each month nurturing ourselves is
low down on our list of priorities. But we can reframe
that. Think of the instructions we get when we board
a plane: if, in the event that oxygen masks deploy, we
are reminded to put the mask on ourselves first, and
then take care of whomever is sitting by us.
Living Life In Balance
The new Minnesota Seasons 2014 calendar is going up
beside the downstairs phone at our house. Its clean
pages are a sharp contrast to the old one which is
hardly readable, with so many notes, reminders, and
appointments, penned in. This shiny new calendar is a
reminder that the beginning of a New Year offers us
the opportunity to assess the previous year, and determine how we want the year ahead to look and feel
differently. Often we think of things like better weight
management and more exercise. But in reality, most
of the challenges we face related to personal care/
stress management/time management have to do with
living our lives out of balance.
Good self-care, in balance, usually means we are going
to be much more effective and satisfied in the other
parts of our lives!
It helps to visualize your life as a wheel with a number
of divisions, separated by “spokes”. Your wheel may
include your work, family time, personal hobbies and
interests, volunteering, friendships, among others. If
any part of your wheel is over-extended, it creates a
bulge or a bump which makes the rest of your life
(wheel) off-balance and rattles you repeatedly in an
uncomfortable way. This can result in difficulties with
sleep, physical symptoms, strained relationships, and
mental and emotional stress.
I have some thoughts about some changes I want to
make. How about you??
Blessings to each of you in 2014,
Sandy Greenwood, Parish Nurse

On the Welcome Table in the Narthex you will see a stack of the magazine Presbyterians Today. It is helpful both
in studying the Bible and in learning about events in the world and how we relate to these events as church people. We hope you find the magazine relevant and helpful in your faith journey. Please take a copy home to read
for yourself. If you wish to return your copy for others to read when you are done, you may do so. Thank You!
