he couple
had moved
from New
York City to a
small home in
Montclair, and
that worked fine for a while.
But after the birth of their
third child, they knew
that they needed a larger
living space. The new house,
shown here, had great bones.
But just as the family had, it
needed to expand. Designers
Kasey Hodgson and Ali
Qualy of Roost Interiors,
working with Montclair-
based RTH Building
Company, performed a gut
renovation, extending the
rear of the house by 15 feet.
The new dimensions allowed
them to brighten and per-
sonalize the interior, which
is airy, open and supremely
kid-friendly.
LET THERE BE LIGHT
Pre-renovation, the kitchen wall ended at the point where the blue upholstered bar stools
now pull up to the Calacatta marble-topped island. The back wall extends into the family
room and accommodates three sets of French doors. While white predominates in the
kitchen, the room is decorated in a neutral palette of earth tones as seen in the backsplash of
tiles from designer Walker Zanger, the table and mid-century caned Breuer chairs, and the new
rug with the geometric pattern. The perimeter countertop is made of manufactured quartz
for greater durability; the pendants above the island are glass globes wrapped in wire
mesh, and the saucer pendant above the kitchen table is from Design Within Reach.
(Above) A mid-century modern credenza sits beyond the right end of the table.
The designers spotted the two-panel artwork above it at a trade event.
