owners’ love of culture

rom the outside, the dark, quiet exterior of the
Firestone home in Montclair’s estate section gives
little hint of what’s contained inside: rooms
enlivened by an assortment of art objects, plus
a downstairs dance studio that gives rise to
artistic expression. No need for the walls to
speak when the décor tells volumes about the homeowners’
creative energy and artistic temperaments.

A TV room? A site for a soon-to-be-neglected
exercise bike? Pam Firestone had ample room in her
basement, but was loathe to put it to traditional use.
Instead, she had a dance studio built there. It was initial-
ly created for her daughter Madeleine, a Montclair High
School student who takes dance lessons five days a
week at Danceworks on Grove Street. But Firestone, an
avid practitioner of Iyengar yoga, enjoys the space, too,
as does her son Andrew, who works out with weights.
Madeleine is seen here performing an arabesque (right,
top). Firestone practices the yoga posture “Moving
Ropes 1” using a series of ropes designed for a variety of
strengthening and relaxation poses (right). They were
installed by her partner, Montclair architect Jose Alcala.
