Grochowski wanted to create a modern sensibility that was also warm . For the first partofthe equation , she installed textured wide-plank floors and introduced curves with furniture upholstered in powder blue velvet fabric . The modern herringbone pattern in the fireplace ’ s marble wall leans Scandinavian , she says . The colorful artwork at right was made by the homeowner , who created a quilt from photos of family events . A custom steel screen fabricated in India gives visitors a special sense of entering the living area after walking through the home ’ s front door .
