he couple in need of design expertise had
two young children, and were relocating
to Glen Ridge from a two-bedroom
apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
“They lived in a hipster neighborhood, and
the woman’s style is bohemian chic,” says
Virginia Toledo, who, along with Jessica Geller, owns id
810 design group in Englewood. “She was the inspiration
for a lot of the patterns in the house.”
It’s not unusual for Toledo and Geller to design homes
with their clients’ styles and predilections in mind. “We
have both partners fill out a questionnaire, with lots of
questions about patterns they like and how they see
themselves living in the home,” Toledo says. “It’s hilarious
how different the answers can be; one says they’re
homebodies, and the other says they’re out all the time.
That’s why we ask them to fill in the questionnaires
separately.” But just as in a marriage, the answers add
up to something beautiful, as is their design of this
Glen Ridge home.
MID-CENTURY MIX AND MATCH
The former dining room was decorated in a traditional, formal style.
The new homeowners wanted an informal, kid-friendly space that
mixed some of their own furniture with new, custom pieces. With the
vintage white table and chairs from the client’s mother, the new custom
banquette and the family storage unit refinished in a lacquered blue-
gray with knobs from Anthropologie, they have achieved their goal. The
room’s high clearance accommodates the chandelier better than the
lower foyer ceiling, and it complements the window treatments and
wallpaper, which the clients love.
