Proper resume formatting is crucial to the success of being noticed by recruiters during your job search. The Career Center recommends you highlight your skills and experience in an efficient way. Typically, recruiters will only look at a resume for less than 10 seconds, and it is essential to have the relevant highlights stand out in order to sell yourself well. It is vital to keep your resume formatting consistent and grammatically correct. A resume is a reflection of you and is the first impression a recruiter has about your work ethic.

Most hiring managers use a tool called the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) which is a software used to process resumes through algorithms. This tracking system ranks resumes based on their compatibility to the content in the job description through keyword identification. This is why it is important to keep everything on your resume relevant to the job you are specifically applying for. It doesn’t hurt to have multiple versions of your resume to cater to the skills and experiences mentioned in the jobs you are applying for. It is essential to connect the dots of what you have that the employer needs.

Key Formatting Tips:

1. Keep font size between 10pt-12pt in order to be legible

2. Stay consistent with spacing and alignment

3. Utilize bold and italics to draw attention to sections and titles

4. Use lines when appropriate to separate sections

5. Write bullet points in a 3-step format: what did you do, why or how did you do it, and quantify with numbers (include results)
