FINANCIALLY KICKSTART
YOUR OWN MAGAZINE
By Giuliana Vargas
ver the past year I have had the honor to get to run a magazine on campus at the University of North Texas with my fellow creative colleagues. Some words of advice through my experience here on campus as 0ver Magazines creative director would be to start with building a team. Logistically I suggest that you that have a variety of different members join your team with that said make sure that not everyone is a creative necessarily. Bringing in just as many people from a business marketing background is critical to sustaining the livelihood of your magazine.
After establishing a solid team of directors discuss with them methods of fundraising as Go Fund me or what has been successful to our organization is selling t-shirts at events. Also analyze the costs and what really matters for us it was our website. That at the moment is our biggest expense and only at the moment. As for wanting to host events I suggest to also partner up with other departments that host events on campus. This truly worked in our favor as it cut our costs when planning events to not have to rent ballrooms and chairs. As we utilized a departments free access to those resources and brought in our creative student volunteers to bring to life fun events as museums and fashion shows.
