It is an exciting experience to look back 10 years from the inception of the magazine to now . The idea of the magazine came easily and was inspired by this rapidly growing medium of encaustic / wax . The construction of the magazine felt daunting . Fortunately , I had an incredible team , excited to collaborate and give the idea life . My wife , Adrienne , with her marketing and artistic careers , pulled together the foundation to work from . Nanette Newbry , a graphic designer and EAI member , designed the logo . Michael Pearce and my brother Kim became our first volunteer editors . In 2013 Kari Gorden the current editor stepped in with her expertise and has taken the magazine to where it is today .
I was and still am impressed how quickly the magazine gained a worldwide audience with emails from artists in rural areas of countries I wasn ’ t sure where on the map to find . Often we are told that the magazine is their only source of inspiration and connection to the medium .
As a team , we created the connectivity of artists and the medium and began to build a community . After 10 years , and years to come , it is and will remain something we all can be proud of . A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has invested their time and energies to build a lasting publication .
It has been both a privilege and joy to work with all of the encaustic / wax artists featured in the 16 issues of Encaustic Arts magazine I have acted as editor on . As I begin to edit my 17 th issue and prepare the catalog for this exhibit , I ’ m grateful for the opportunity to work with so many amazing people .
Creating the magazine has been a learning process . I have been assisted generously many times by the artists themselves . It has always been my goal to present the artists ’ work through simple , straightforward layouts to allow their text and work to shine - and I continue to refine that process over time .
Through the magazine , we have looked to showcase work in a range of styles , methods of application , and combinations of encaustic / wax with other media . We have chosen to present artists at all levels of their professional careers . In each issue , we look to offer something new to learn or to be inspired by . This exhibition offers the opportunity to revisit the depth and range of encaustic / wax as a medium and to spotlight new and established artists using encaustic / wax .
