It is not simply a weakglute problem- it is how you control load in a single-leg stance

HIP DROP IS A MOVEMENT, NOT A DIAGNOSIS.
A small amount of pelvic motion is normal. What matters is whether one side consistently drops more, the trunk shifts with it, the knee drifts inward, or the pattern becomes more obvious as fatigue builds.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING
Running is a repeated series of short single-leg contacts. Your foot hits the ground, your body moves over that leg, and the opposite leg leaves the floor. During this brief stance phase, groundreaction force rises quickly while the pelvis, femur and trunk all continue to move.
The stance-side hip has to control the pelvis, but it does not work alone. The ankle and knee are accepting load, the femur is rotating, the foot is interacting with the ground, and the trunk is helping position your centre of mass. The goal is not a perfectly horizontal pelvis. The goal is to control the amount and speed of pelvic movement while the rest of the body keeps moving.
WHY THE TRUNK AND KNEE OFTEN FOLLOW
Imagine landing on your right leg as the left side of the pelvis begins to drop. If the trunk stays far to the left, the external demand around the right hip increases. One way the body can reduce that demand is to shift the trunk toward the stance leg. The lean you see may therefore be a compensation, not the original problem.
The knee can also appear to move inward as the femur moves into adduction and internal rotation. That does not mean the knee is the source. It may simply be showing you how the pelvis, hip and trunk are organising load above it.
STRENGTH MATTERS- BUT TIMING MATTERS TOO
Traditional hip-abductor work can improve strength, but running adds one major constraint: time. A side-lying leg raise gives you plenty of time to create force. Running does not. During stance, the system has to generate enough force quickly enough to control movement before the body has already moved through the position.
So the better question is not only:“ How strong are the glutes?” It is:“ Can the stance-side system absorb load, control rotation and organise the body over one leg at running speed?” That requires strength, eccentric control, rate of force development, trunk control, rotational control and coordination.
