Double-sided
MAG!
You are holding in your hand
something of a rarity of the sports
magazine world.
Perhaps it’s an enigma? Or perhaps
some sort of magazine version of a
Siamese twin?
However, it isn’t a complete
revolution, as magazines have
“twinned” themselves with their
sister publications for various reasons
before.
Our reason for including both our titles
in a single printed copy? Simple. We
would like to give you, the readers
of Modern Cyclist the opportunity of
reading the other magazine in our
stable, Modern Athlete, in a powerful,
two-for-the-price-of-one quality read.
So, not only are we back in print after
a short hiatus – the August 2015 issue
of Modern Cyclist was only available
in digi mag format – we also welcome
a whole bunch of good folk who are
currently readers of Modern Athlete
to our pages. We hope you enjoy
reading our articles as much as we
enjoyed putting them together for
you.
Our lead article is the interesting
saga of how one of Bob Hewitt’s
victims has discovered cycling and
intends “Riding for a purpose” at the
Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge in
November this year. Suellen Sheenan –
who has definitely risen to the position
of the person I’d most like to meet – is
certainly a brave and determined
sportswoman who has, against the
odds, decided to re-enter the sporting
world. And well done to her!
We also catch up with five enterprising
cyclists who plan to do an Everesting
attempt of the daunting Linksfield
Ridge. They’ll be riding up and down
that steep, twisty road more than 80
times at the beginning of October,
raising funds for a very worthy charity.
Our “Go Girl” article this month is
an amazing story of one of our top
mountain bikers who, during recovery
time after an injury, decided to
start a business of manufacturing
T-shirts to supplement her decreased
income. Amy Beth McDougall has
since got back onto the saddle and
will probably get back onto a few
podiums in the months to come.
And don’t forget to check out
our article about the forthcoming
Standard Bank Africa Cycle Fair. This
now-annual event promises to be
even better than its 2014 incarnation
and will include an inter-provincial
schools’ mountain bike event and a
whole lot of fun for the family.
No matter whether you are a cyclist
or a runner, we hope you enjoy
the articles we have collected for
this issue of Modern Cyclist. And
remember that the big events are
starting again next month, so we hope
you are training for them.
Train hard!
