A t the beginning of December the CMA officially received the bicycle of five-time Comrades Marathon winner Arthur Newton from another five-time winner, and the oldest surviving winner of the race, Jackie Mekler, who was there on behalf of the Road Runners Club in the UK to present the bicycle to the Comrades Marathon Museum. Jackie also presented the museum with three magnificent pennants which were awarded to Arthur by the organisers of the Comrades Marathon in the 1920’s. This bicycle is thus not only a mechanical antique, but a part of road running history, and CMA Chairman Macdonald Chitja expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the CMA to the Road Runners Club for entrusting the Comrades Marathon Museum with this priceless relic, as well as to Walter Stuart of Rand Athletic Club, who was instrumental in getting the bicycle shipped to South Africa.
