PA RT NE R ED IA M T he 80’s and early 90’s saw the Run/Walk For Life Athletic Club, or RFLAC as it was known back then, compete in their ‘Purple People Eaters’ outfit, which was then replaced by the blue and white vertical panels of the current, soon-to-be-phased-out kit. Now brace yourself for the totally new funky lumo ‘sunburst’ vest and T-shirt, with a unique grey ‘champagne flute’ panel down the middle of the back, which morphs into black to match the black shorts and tights. Added to this is, a discreet Emergency Response Patch has been added, where members can store their personal medical and contact information so that it is available to the club’s 24-hour ER call centre in the event of an accident or mishap, thus affording members peace of mind when out training or competing. Ma RWFL Revamp! This year, Run/Walk For Life will be undergoing a metamorphosis, with bright new club colours hitting the roads all over SA. It’s only the third change of look in 30 years for the organisation with over 30,000 members in 100 branches throughout South Africa, making it the biggest athletic club in the country. T he run/walk for life The new-look RWFL kit So What Are You Waiting For? A Better Choice At world class events like Comrades and Two Oceans, we have RWFL hospitality areas, with food and drink, and in some instances, masseuses available. The annual Valentines Road Race in Randburg sees hundreds of members meet at our massive cordoned off area to enjoy the braai fires and a cold one afterwards. Add to this our regular staple diet of weekend LSD’s, hill and speed training, new computerised VO2max testing that includes online feedback reports, and you have an athletics club that gives so much more. And all this for an annual membership fee that wouldn’t buy you a meal for two at a family restaurant! But it’s not just about the new gear, it’s also about a value-offering that will make other clubs sit up and evaluate their own offering. How many are aware that RWFL had over 700 finishers in the 2014 Comrades Marathon? Or that in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban alone, the club manned gazebos erected at over 160 major road races? Throw in the 60 fun runs and special event races that we assist with nationally, and we can estimate that RWFL was represented at well over 300 events last year! It’s truly a magnificent example of our commitment to offering excellent service Rear view of and value for money to our members, the new kit and the road racing community. Images: Courtesy RWFL Our AC membership fees compare very favourably with most big running clubs and in many instances match those of virtual clubs who offer a licence number and little else. Our manned gazebos are tended to by our managers’ corps, including safekeeping of keys and belongings, and we supply chairs to rest weary legs after a gruelling race. We supply water, hot drinks and snacks at selected races, and always humour bored spouses and children! It’s not uncommon to find over 100 RWFL athletes at our tents after an event.
