For MADIBA race report Ma Umbambiswano Eco Ridge Trail Run, Johannesburg, 19 July The Modern Athlete Team donated their 67 minutes for Madiba by running the 6.7-mile and 4.6-mile trails up Linksfield Ridge, along with 2000 entrants, to help the St Andrews School for Girls raise over R100 000 for its Umbambiswano programme that helps underprivileged children get a better education. – BY LAUREN VAN DER VYVER The Mandela Day campaign message is a simple one: To dedicate time out of your day to give back to those in need – and what better way than lacing up on a cold winter’s morning to take in the scenic views and hit the trails around Senderwood and Linksfield in Johannesburg. Entrants had to deal with hefty climbs in the suburb of Senderwood before the Eco Ridge’s steep climbs, rocky outcrops and winding downhills, but it was definitely a treasure to hit the trails within the city. Image: Jennifer Law For a Cause Most of each runner’s R67 entry fee went towards the more than R100 000 raised for Umbambiswano, a schools programme partnered by St Andrew’s that focuses on students from underperforming schools or disadvantaged backgrounds and helps with focused teaching and school supplies. Umbambiswano organising committee member Dave Morris thanked everybody for their support on the day. “We need about R1 million a year for the programme to be a success, and there are so many triumphs in the programme – from students getting bursaries to amazing pass rates.
