Advertorial F Proud partner of the official Comrades Pasta Party brought to you by Modern Athlete and Fatti’s & Moni’s atti’s & Moni’s is a part of South Africa’s Italian heritage, but the two names didn’t always live so happily side by side. Luigi Fatti opened a tiny grocery store to do business in early Johannesburg in 1896, selling macaroni, olive oil and wines from Italy. Ten years later, Pietro and Giacomo Moni established Moni Brothers Limited, which catered for the rising demand for Italian beverages and delicacies. The First World War caused a scarcity of imported goods, so the Moni brothers began to manufacture their own goods locally, and became a huge rival of Fatti’s business. Eventually the competing families signed a peace treaty, and in 1953, the Moni brothers secured a controlling interest in the Fatti business. Tiger Brands finally brought the two companies together as Fatti’s & Moni’s in 1982. Today, the company continues to produce the fine-quality pasta with Italian authenticity that South Africans have always loved – and is proud to be a presenting sponsor alongside Modern Athlete magazine for the official 2014 Comrades Pasta Party on 30 May in Durban.
