WHAT’S NEWS
Zola (and kids) lead the way
Currently in a build-up to the Old Mutual
Two Oceans ultra-marathon over Easter,
Zola Pieterse had an excellent run in the
Charleston Marathon in the USA, which
she won in 2:59:42, the second-fastest
marathon of her career and thus far the
quickest time by a South African veteran
(aged 40-49) this year. And while she was
smashing the South Carolina State record,
daughter Lisa was winning the Charleston
5km women’s title and son Michael was
finishing third in the men’s 5km!
Two Records for Elroy
Andre returns with a PB
At the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix
track meet in Birmingham in the UK on
15 February, 2012 Olympian André Olivier
ran a magnificent personal indoor best of
1:44.99 in the 800m, finishing second to
reigning World Champ and World Indoor
Champ Mohamed Aman’s new Ethiopian
record of 1:44.52. It was Olivier’s first
race since he broke his foot in the same
city last year. In a very fast race, four of
the top five ran PB’s.
In the space of a week in mid-February,
Elroy Gelant twice improved his own SA
Indoor record in the 3000m. First he ran
7:45.45 in Mondeville, France, and then
he smashed that time with a blistering
7:39.55 in Ghent, Belgium, when he
finished fourth at the RecordBank.de
Flanders Indoor meet. While Indoor
times tend to be slower than outdoor
times, Elroy’s new Indoor record is faster
than Juan van Deventer’s outdoor SA
record of 7:41.06.
After a brilliant run in the US collegiate
meeting between Arkansas and Texas
on 17 January, SA’s Dominique Scott
was named National Athlete of the Week
by the USTF Cross-country Coaches
Association. Scott won the mile in a PB
and then-world leader of 4:38.49, and
helped Arkansas to beat the highly rated
Texans after also running the anchor leg
in the distance medley relay. Two weeks
later she improved her PB to 4:36.11 at
the Razorback Team Invitational, where
she also won the 5000m, and two
weeks after that, she ran a new 3000m
PB of 9:02.33 at the Husky Classic Meet.
