NOT JUST ABOUT ELITES
It has been brought to my attention that the Soaring Eagle
trail run was postponed from 1 March to 18 October to
accommodate the “ELITE” runners, due to the SA Ultra Trail
Running Champs taking place on the 10th March in Gauteng,
after being added to the calendar later on. I have an issue with
this: If it wasn’t for us slow runners to “pay the bills,” events
wouldn’t be possible. Us slow runners also train hard and
prepare ourselves for a event. Some people work weekends
and have to arrange months in advance to be able to attend an
event, now two weeks before the event it just gets postponed.
We all have to make choices in life, even if you’re an ‘ELITE’
runner. – Runnerstalk
I have similar feelings about organisers who offer more prize
money to the elites in order to grow their events. How about
some more prizes deeper into the field? – Ed.
YOUNG MASTERS
With reference to the Race Report in the January issue of
Modern Athlete, I would just like to set the record straight that
there are ‘young’ masters athletes in track and field athletics,
too, in the 30-49 age groups. Often masters is portrayed as
an older generation group, which does not do justice to the
‘young’ masters, who are highly competitive.
