What The Athletes Had To Say
@RichardAsprey: “Of?cially quali?ed for Comrades. A few organisational issues with #thegautengmarathon, but its got potential for a great run.” David Manja (21km men’s winner): “I got very tired, but I’m happy about my time today! There was a lot of competition on the route and there were some hills that were tough, but I could deal with that. The cool start was perfect!” Joseph Sedulo: “I ran the half marathon and I really enjoyed the course. I was a bit frustrated at the late start and there not being enough water, but the route made up for that. There was some wind, but it just made me cruise along!” Caroline Wostmann (@11Caz11): “I really enjoyed the #GautengMarathon. I found it to be well organised and a fast route. It’s a pity the turnout was so poor.” Sankia Morani: “I took part in the 10km. There was a great mix of hills on the route, which I usually enjoy, but there was a huge hill just after 5km that I had to walk. I think the organisers will better themselves. They had a few shortcomings, but they will make note and improve.” Ntshavheni Mudau: “Compared to last year, it went well. There was an issue with buses, but other than that the route is a great one to get stuck into. I don’t think there’s a better course in this country!”

with the top three after 2km, I knew I would have to push hard,” he says. “They were putting pressure on me, but I knew I could make it and it’s a very special win for me. It’s great to be a part of this race!” In the 21km, Nedbank’s David Manja cruised to a 1:04:58 win with Rene Kalmer bagging the women’s title in 1:14:43. For Rene, the win was unexpected, given the strong ?eld and tough course, as well as her recent return from injury. “There were some heavy hills in the second half, but everything seemed to be on track then,” she says. “I had some issues with injuries in the beginning of my year, so I’m more appreciative of wins after setbacks.”
