But with that all said , the qualifying standards have become so tough , that the number of direct qualifiers may be lower this year . For example , the qualifying standards for the 100m sprint at the 2022 World Champs in Eugene , USA , were 10.05 seconds for men and 11.15 for women . For Budapest 2023 , the bar has been raised to 10.00 and 11.08 , respectively . For this reason , World Athletics has introduced a Label Rankings points system , in order to hit their own targets of the amount of athletes who will compete at the World Championships .

Qualified : Tshepo Tshite and Ryan Mphahlele due to the fact that endurance events of the that length and nature take longer for the body to recover from , and the athletes may have needed more than one attempt to qualify . Similar consideration was accorded to athletes in the 10,000m , 20km race walk and combined events , who also have 18 months , from 31 January 2022 until 30 July 2023 to qualify .
For the relay races , the original standards were that the first 12 teams from the World Relays Championships 2023 event would qualify directly for Budapest , and the remaining four places would be filled by the next four best-ranked teams at the end of the qualification period ( taking into account only results from WA-approved events ). However , with the 2023 World Relays being postponed to 2024 , World Athletics has changed the qualification criteria : The first eight-placed teams from the 2022 World Champs qualify automatically , as well as the next eight best ranked teams in the World Rankings .
Qualified : Lythe Pillay and Wayde van Niekerk
2 World Ranking Positions
Athletes accumulate points at all WA events , which determines their position in the WA rankings . These rankings are based on the World Athletics Points Table system , where all performances at WA events are rated , and athletes who do not meet the automatic qualification standards , can be selected to compete at the World Championships specifically to fill the prescribed number of entrants per event . For example , if only 15 athletes qualify for the 10,000m by posting the required time , the final 12 places will be made up of those with the highest points , in order to make up the required total of 27 athletes . The rule of only three athletes per country still applies .
