HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

These are some of the standout performances in November-December from the annals of SA running .
13 November 1970
De Villiers Lamprecht is famous for being the first South African to run a dream mile , which he did on the Coetzenburg track in Stellenbosch on 13 November 1964 . What is less well known is that he set another SA Record on the exact same date six years later . On this evening , once again at the Coetzenburg meeting commemorating his first sub-4 achievement , Lamprecht scored an easy victory in 3:57.7 to break his own national mark of 3:58.6 , run in 1968 . Remarkably , these were not the only two SA mile records set on 13 November : In 1937 , Klasie Wessels ran 4:16.0 in Port Elizabeth .

15 November 1975
The first four editions of the hilly Hohenort 15km in Constantia , Cape Town , were held in November . On this day , in the first race ( over 16.6 km ), former double Two Oceans champion Don Hartley got the win in 57:13 . The distance changed to 15 km in 1984 , and these days the race is held in January .
11 December 1982
Two South African mile records have been set in December , with the second one coming on this day at the 19th Vernon Barnes Memorial Meeting in Port Elizabeth . It was produced by Johan Fourie , who achieved the first of his four SA four-lap records with an outstanding 3:53.29 , more than four tenths of a second faster than Sydney Maree ’ s previous national mark . Over the next five years , Fourie brought the record down to 3:50.82 , a time that was the fifthfastest in the world in 1987 and stood as a national record for more than 27 years . At the same meeting Hans van der Veen broke the SA u . 17 record for 1500 m with his 3:42.92 .

The Calder Cup and Sulin Trophy races in Durban ( the latter for women only ) were combined in 1982 , and the distance of the race was changed from a half marathon to 10km sometime between 1985 and 1988 ( results for these years are not available ). On this day in 1990 , Jabulani Mnguni won the men ’ s race in 30:27 , while Colleen de Reuck scored her second successive win in the women ’ s competition in a quick 33:30 , the ninth-fastest time in South Africa that year .
