RUN WITH RORY shouted“ GO” from 200 metres back just so he knew we were still there.
Next thing I knew, Chappies was a thing of the past and I had caught up to Jacques. My energy levels were good, my mood was fantastic, and I honestly thought my medal was now a sure thing. Life was perfect! I reached into my pocket for a celebratory Cramp Assault. And it’ s a good thing I celebrated in that manner because, a short while later, I came face to face with Constantia Nek!
I suppose the only bit of comfort I found on this horrible piece of road was when I conceded, 27 metres in, that it is not possible to run this part of the race. The road is so terribly cambered that the only way to walk it comfortably is if you cut off 30cm of one leg. But then there’ s the hassle of trying to find a tourniquet to stem the blood loss and what do you do with the 30cm of your leg that you cut off? You can’ t just leave it on the side of the road. Two Oceans has a very strict“ no littering” policy, and rightly so.
Cutting a long story( rather than a leg) short, Constantia Nek came and went and once that was done, the real euphoria of the reality of actually getting this medal kicked in! Life was perfect once again! It stayed that way until I crossed the finish line in a time of 06:49:20. Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon, I’ ll be back! Thank you, Jacques, for getting me through Chappies. And thank you, Hollywood Athletics, for everything else. Love you. 2-nils! Till next month. Toodles
