An independent store, within the fashion industry, will generally be a niche store or a boutique. These can be identified by its limited size, scope and inventory.

The physical store will be located in a lesser of a location than a retail multi store, due to high funds for rent. A boutique or niche store will have less footfall but higher brand loyalty from customers as they are able to develop a better quality relationship with their clients, making them return.

These stores would have limited stock due to profit being reinvested. Often stores like these are opened by families who don't have massive funds to invest into higher rent and marketing strategies, therefore stock rotation can only occur when there is sufficient funds. This means that early months, like January are often difficult for these stores as many consumers aren't shopping during this time.

An independent store would have less staff due to the lack of demand. This means that the store can be manned by often 2- 3 people, who would work regular shifts, meaning they would be able to develop personal relationships with their clients. The business owner can keep a close eye on staff, ensuring there are high standards of customer service. Due to not having a high demand, staff will be able to provide a personal shop experience and spend time with the client, understanding their needs and being able to suggest other items which could be useful for them.

These stores would often only have clients in the local surrounding areas but will be known for their exceptional customer service and quirky stock. Their stock will be specialised but unique to the brand. Often these stores can have items which are homemade which often attracts an older clientele. An older clientele enjoy high levels of customer service which is also provided within these types of stores.
