Rumors

By: Jin Choi

People particularly between the stage of teenagers to full grown adults unintentionally spread rumors in times of friend gatherings or seeing someone who is unlike the ideal style of theirs. Why would anyone slip a piece of information that was never verified in the first place? For one thing, the origin where the rumors spread most likely was botched. A person would come to believe a certain information is true when it isn't and thus expand a false rumor. However, there are also events where the situation isn't meant to be accidental but intentional. However, it seems unnecessary to hurt someone or state a fake story to the world even though peer pressure might be involved. Middle and high school is the most likely place where rumors are spread due to the mix of puberty and experimentations of fitting in with other people. Yes, it's tempting (everyone was once a teenager with random, emotional issues), but that doesn't provide a good reason to make anyone a victim of false lies.

Rumors are spread to bring in confidence and degrade another person. But why? Someone is having a bad day and a feeling of superiority could always lighten a mood. As Venus Williams, a professional tennis player, stated "I guess rumors are more exciting than the truth." Venus has been faced with many rumors after she was titled the first black woman to win world championship in tennis during the Open Era. The truth as she figured out, might seem dull to people and that's where exaggeration comes in.
