Greenpeace: Saving
By Stephanie G, Caitlin F, Riely G, Sam B, Andy G
Thousands of miles of forests are being destroyed to create disposable products all
over the world. These ancient forests are home to some of the most diverse species on
the planet. The vast forests also help to maintain the climate. Deforestation is a problem
whose severity is under recognized. Rolf Skar is an activist working with Greenpeace to
combat this problem.(greenpeace)Skar has contributed to international Greenpeace
campaigns to stop deforestation in the Canadian boreal forest, the Paradise forests of
Southeast Asia, and countless others. (greenpeace) His goal is to end deforestation by
2020. He has done incredible work to stop deforestation by public awareness, volunteer
efforts and politics.
One of Greenpeace's ways to help the forests is through public awareness and
education. Rolf Skar has done work to educate the general public and students. Most
students learn about the climate in school and they should use it to make conscious
decisions and spread the word about forests.(greenpeace) Before Rolf Skar worked for
Greenpeace he created a high school waste reduction program and provided
environmental education for at-risk youths.(greenpeace bio) At Greenpeace they work
to educate large and small companies alike to become greener. They also educate
students on being an activist. They push the companies to implement green policies and
often it takes the help of consumers.
A second way Skar is combating deforestation is through volunteer work.
Greenpeace loves the help of volunteers; they accept volunteers from anywhere that
help them in campaigning, protesting, educating,
and donations. They rely on the voluntary
donations of individual supporters and grantsupport from foundations. (greenpeace: what we
do) Normal people have consumer power but
volunteers also participate in peaceful protests
and ground work. Volunteers play a huge roll in
Greenpeace and do all sorts of things, from
campaigning to graphic design to scientific
analysis.(greenpeace: greenwire) Greenpeace
works with indigenous communities, supporting
the demarcation of traditional boundaries and
eco-forestry initiatives, and offers a global
platform through which these communities can
address the rest of the world.(greenpeace: forest
communities). Volunteers are the base of
