500 Steps Towards Freedom:
Child slavery is an issue in many third world countries. It is
estimated by the International Labour Organization that
there were at least 8.4 million children enslaved in 2002
(“Child Labour”, p. 2). When Vivienne Harr, a 10 year old
with a dream, saw a photo of two slave boys holding hands
for comfort, she knew she had to help. With the support of
Vivienne, child slavery will soon be just a problem of the
past. She, along with her foundation, “Make A Stand
Lemonade” manufactures “lemon-aid” and donates a large
percentage of the proceeds to organizations that help free
slaves. By working in the business and media realms,
Vivienne has been able to free over 500 child slaves (“Your
Impact”, p. 2).
Through Vivienne’s company alone, over two million
dollars have been raised in an effort to both increase
awareness of child slavery and to free slaves in third world
countries (“Child Labour”, p. 1). Since her initial efforts,
Vivienne has started producing more and more products.
For example, Vivienne has introduced new ways to support
her cause. She has created bottled lemonade and “Make A
Stand” T-shirts for sale whose profits go to small, child
slavery-ending organizations like the Nepal Youth
Foundation, Not For Sale, and Unicef (“All Products”, p.1).
Vivienne continues to introduce more products to her list
of merchandise including new flavors of lemonade and
articles of clothing that will both support her cause and
spread awareness to efforts against child slavery. Vivienne
has gone from a daily lemonade stand every day for a year
to a self-crafted, professional business that still supports
her cause (“Impact”, p. 2).
