Group Reflection
3.1 Fernvale Gardens School (FGS)
Our attachment at Fernvale Gardens School (FGS) gave us an alternative
view to curriculum, assessment and pedagogy within a classroom. Truly, in
each FGS classroom, differentiation pitched according to each child’s
learning needs exist, and this is something that our mainstream school
classrooms can look at more deeply to adopt useful elements, if we are
striving towards bringing out the best potential within each child. For a start,
we could begin looking at the teaching and learning resources we prepare
for our students, together with the level of scaffolding that we infuse within
our pedagogy, to vary the learning objectives and extent of guidance for each
student within the classroom, based on ability as well as possible
deployment of staff to further support students with greater need. Back in
schools, we need to break out of the “one-size-fits-all” mentality, and look at
education catered to each child.
As a team, we recognised the importance the HEART of a teacher plays in
teaching. Especially given the student profile at FGS and from the sharing
that the teachers, social workers and therapists face on a daily basis, the
