Blood and Urine Test

Several test results may be abnormal in patients with CPEO including amino acids, lactate, CK activity (figure 2), and urine.

Genetic Test

Blood tests will be conducted to check for mutations in the genetic material of your chromosomes and the mitochondrial DNA. CPEO usually requires that the genetic test be done on a muscle biopsy sample.

CK or creatine kinase is a type of enzyme that muscles need to function. It can be found in the heart, brain, skeletal muscles and other tissues. A CK test measures the amount of CK in a patients blood. High CK levels indicates that there has been recent muscle damage. This can be seen in some muscular disorders.
